Interesting observations – my thoughts on this: Substack seems to be populated by people who are moving away from the traditional social media. Traditional mandated consistent, quick posts to capture (and keep) the attention of users. Substack attempts to do this via subscriptions because of the nature of news letters. It is a new model in the sense that it seems to combine the quick posts to capture attention (Notes) and the longer form newsletters to keep the attention. I similarly enjoy reading more about stories behind the photographs. And instead of directing me to the food court, as Seth affectionately calls YouTube, Notes gently nudges you to the newsletters. YouTube has done a lot for photographers and there are some great channels out there but making videos and running a channel is labor intensive. If you are focused on photography you should (IMHO) focus on what will give you most reward. Substack, and writing about your work, is still an effective way with a lot less time needed to create something which will still build an audience.
