The idea of selling my photos have been something I’ve thought about for years.
Initially the idea was purely financial. Logically speaking it makes sense – have fun while ‘working’ and make money doing it. A perfect setup. Right?
If you’ve ever been in this type of scenario you soon realize a few things:
- Capturing photos worth selling isn’t as easy as one wishes it to be. It takes time, effort and often costs you. Either time or money. Crane’s law.
- You understand what you’re doing is a little bit of an insult to your art form. You’re essentially pouring parts of yourself into a finished product and now you want to sell it?
- You struggle to find a middle ground because as you progress down this path you find the work needed to sell a photo IS LIKE A FULL TIME JOB. Which makes the idea of ‘doing what you love’ feel pointless? Aren’t you just trading one wheel for another?
I’ve gone through these and many other thoughts and come to a simple conclusion (which fits in with my ideas and my journey with photography).
Why not attempt to sell my prints?
Does it make me less of a photographer? In the eyes of some it might. Does it make me less interested in making good photos and technical points like composition or lighting? Maybe you think it does.
And whether people enjoy it or whether they don’t – this isn’t their decision and it’s not their journey. My goal with photography is different. My end result will be different. I’m still as interested in the subject as I was when I started. I’m still curious and expanding my knowledge about photography.
With all this said – I’m happy to share with you my first photo for sale. I’ve had three other ‘photos’ available for sale but those were merely tests to see how everything worked. So far so good.
If you’re curious about this, feel free to have a look at my photograph. Any feedback, thoughts and ideas are welcome.
tl;dr
I added a photo from my ‘Apartments’ photo project up for sale on my store. Realistically I’m expecting this to be a slow start. Even a slow start is a start.
