I have always enjoyed images like the one above.
It is interesting to capture the in focus photos. Look at the details: bricks in the façade or the tiny details in each individual window. Now look at no details. Details VS no details. Almost Zen like.
In my ‘Movie Posters’ post I use out of focus images as the background to each of the quotes. If you’re interested to see the results you can find them right here. (will open in a new tab, of if you’re using Chrome you can open it in a split tab).
I am trying to capture more of these images to add a bit more depth to my “Apartments” photo project. It is good to have one type of image to create something to tie the project together but another level can only add more nuance and depth. I think so at least : )
How-to
I haven’t tried this yet with my Canon but I suspect I will need to set the lens to manual focus. With the XE-2 it is easy. I will focus on something very close to me and then depress the shutter button halfway to ‘hold’ the focus. Next step is to point the camera towards the apartments and if everything went well you see something like this:

I wonder if I could lock the auto-focus on a specific distance, perhaps less than a meter. I haven’t really tried to be too technical with this but if it saves me some time I might as well use the option – if it exists.
tl;dr
Do something different with your photos. Your creativity will thank. Here are four more photos which I captured last night. I’m about to go and put on the kettle and then take a few more photos. I’d like to hear your thoughts and also see some of your ‘out of focus’ images.

PS.
If you’d like to support my work I have a store where I am selling some of my photos – store here. If you’re interested in a zine I made around the Apartment photo project you can find it here – Zine
