An attempt at still life.

I have been out with my camera a few times.

Probably more in the last few months than in the previous time frame last year. Most of the images I capture on these Sunday (and lately Saturday) morning trips aren’t what I have in mind.

It’s street photography. But it doesn’t feel like it. I went out this morning and took more photos but I don’t find the same enjoyment in them as I previously did. I won’t quit this endeavor but I think I’ll either adjust my approach or perhaps shelve it for a month or two.

In the cupboard I have a box of spice. Vindaloo Curry. A local brand which also does a lovely variety of spices. I enjoy cooking and using a new spice from time to time makes my cooking experiences a bit more interesting.

Cavatappi.

Apart from the flavor of the spice I enjoy the design on the box. The lettering, the font. The feel of the packaging. Everything falls into place. I am often drawn to design on everyday items. And bright colors.

For this I went with my Fujifilm XE-2. I enjoy shooting with my Canon but the look of the images are different. Perhaps it is the glass. For this image I went back to the Classic Chrome film simulation. I’ve recently been experimenting with some of the other built-in simulations. Velvia1 is good for night time photos (sometimes) but for a still life where you are looking for just a normal, not too bright image it won’t work.

Filmy grain filter.

I shot at f/2.8 for the blurry background. I had to shoot at a slow shutter speed because the daylight was fading faster than I hoped for.

If you’re new to still life photos like me, definitely use a tripod and a timer (or remote trigger / app ). The name of the type of photo says it all and if you want crisp photos you don’t to see that soft blur left behind by a shake from pressing the shutter button. I used a 2 second timer for these photos.

Below are a few more of the photos – product posed differently but using the same grain filter.

Thanks for reading : )
